This was another poem that came out in one splurge, this time on a single 55 minute train ride. Lots of my poems start with a rhyme or pun that I like and the rest just falls out from that. In this case I wanted to use 'Genghis can' as a play on 'Genghis Khan' and so I did. I also really liked the idea of demisting mysteries. After that the rest was obvious.
Genghis Rat
If Scotland Yard have drawn a blank,
And Poirot's scratched his head,
If Sherlock doesn't have a clue,
Try Genghis Rat instead.
He'll demist all your mysteries,
He'll always have a plan,
When others just can't solve the crime,
Be sure that Genghis can.
Few can match his intellect,
His searing speed of thought,
Though many crooks have tried their luck,
There's none he hasn't caught.
'Twas he who trapped the Thompson Gang,
He solve the Case of Fleas,
But the one that pushed him more than those,
Was the Case of my Missing Keys.
I'd looked behind the sofa,
Above, below, around,
I'd turned the cupboards upside-down,
My keys could not be found.
I needed a professional,
A sleuth extraordinaire,
I'd barely put the phone back down,
'Fore Genghis Rat was there.
He wore his dirty rain-mac,
And shabby were his shoes,
But his nose was sharp, his eyes were bright,
As he sniffed around for clues.
He knocked on doors and dabbed for prints,
He swabbed for DNA,
He cross-examined witnesses,
Then came to me to say.
"I've narrowed down the field,
Of all the possibilities,
There remains only one place left,
Check your pocket for your keys!"
Nothing could disguise the look,
Of shock upon my face,
The genius had done it!
He'd gone and cracked the case!
Another thing 'bout Genghis Rat,
Is the value of his fees,
He only ever wants his pay,
In Hula Hoops and cheese.
So if there's been a murder,
Or your Grandma's lost her cat,
The only name you need to know,
Is that of Genghis Rat.
