This was one of the first poems I wrote and it started, as many of my poems do, with a single phrase I liked, in this case the words, "a digger dug a", which is just fun to say. This was the first time that a whole poem just popped out without any effort from me. I wish it would happen like that more often.
The Digger and the Mole
A digger dug a hole,
When he came across a mole,
Who said his hole was bigger,
Than the hole dug by the digger.
"Let's put it to the test,
And see who digs the best,
We'll each dig for a minute,
And the bigger hole will win it."
So the digger dug the biggest hole,
That he had ever dug,
Then looked up from the bottom,
Feeling rather smug,
At the mole up at the top,
Who looked down with a shrug,
"You are the bigger digger,
That there is no doubt of,
But at least I've never dug a hole,
Too deep to get out of!"
So the mole went on his way,
Reflecting with a snigger,
"I'm really rather glad,
That I'm not a bigger digger."
